Designing with nature rather than against it is not a new concept. Pete Wimberly, the founder of WATG, was a pioneer of this approach. Many of our legacy projects, some dating back almost 80 years, still embody this philosophy. Since becoming a WELL AP professional, focusing on designing spaces that promote health and wellness, I have delved deeper into the importance of incorporating nature into interior spaces and the overall built environment to enhance well-being on various levels through mindful choices.

Biophilic design encourages nurturing the innate human-nature interaction. Central to this concept is vegetation which can enhance positive feelings, expedite healing from stress, and improve overall well-being. Incorporating biophilic design into urban homes, though challenging, is more desired than ever.

Here are some cost-effective ways to achieve this with maximum impact:

Use nature-derived patterns such as botanical wallcoverings in enclosed spaces

Introduce raw and natural textures like linen, silk, wood, and stone

Position furniture to overlook outdoor views and decorate with potted plants

Utilize indoor plants as room dividers to enhance the connection with nature

Establish a small herb garden for sensory stimulation and a 'garden to plate' approach

Incorporate water elements for relaxation sounds and visual appeal.

In emphasizing lighting's psychological effects:

Optimize light flow by rearranging furniture to allow for adequate illumination

Place reflective surfaces strategically to extend and multiply light

Maintain a light color palette for curtains, furniture, and finishes

Consider open-space designs or translucent partitions to maximize natural light penetration

Explore artificial lighting technologies that mimic natural light patterns when natural light is limited.
