(March 20): OpenAI is developing a desktop application to bring together its ChatGPT chatbot, coding tool and web browser in an effort to keep users engaged in the face of fierce competition from rivals like Anthropic PBC.
The single application will combine ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser infused with artificial intelligence that it released last year, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named discussing private details. It’s unclear when the application will launch. The company will continue to offer its standalone ChatGPT app.
Fidji Simo, the company’s chief executive officer of applications, will lead the effort to combine the products into one application and work on marketing it, the person said. OpenAI president Greg Brockman will work with Simo on the product, they added. OpenAI declined to comment.
Details about the development of the app were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Alphabet Inc’s Google and other developers have unveiled a number of AI models in recent years that are capable of taking on increasingly complicated tasks — from analysing a company’s earnings reports to writing code to generating startlingly realistic-looking images and videos.
