Why? “To provide clarity to the various teams within Finance on our mission. A differentiated capability within D (Deliver Core Finance) is our Enterprise Performance Management system, which is designed in-house. This is the foundation of how we manage the bank, including funds transfer pricing (see Why DBS outperformed local and foreign peers) as well as our investor communications,” replies Chng.
“The CFO’s role at DBS is a very wide role. My vision was to build the finance function to be a source of competitive advantage for DBS,” says Chng Sok Hui, group CFO, DBS Group Holdings, who has been in the role since October 2008. More than that, Chng built the corporate treasury function, which has given the CEO, CFO and the DBS board a line of sight into the banking group’s ability to accrete capital, how much capital it needs for growth and how much to return over a period of time.
This structured mindset also shapes how Chng leads her team. She uses the acronym DBSG in her Finance town halls. D stands for Deliver Core Finance; B is Business Agility and Impact; S (Steer Organisation Resources), and G (Governance and Investor Relations).
