Sembcorp Marine (SembMarine), on March 23, announced that it has secured a contract for the construction of a wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV). The vessel is based on SembMarine’s in-house design in collaboration with its customer.

The contract was signed by SembMarine’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Marine Rigs & Floaters Pte Ltd.

The project is slated to be completed in early 2025.

According to SembMarine, the WTIV will be capable of operating at a high level of efficiency and to handle the next generation of wind turbines. The new wind turbines are scaled up in size with longer, lighter rotor blades, taller towers, more reliable drivetrains, performance-optimising control systems and multi-megawatt power generation, says the group.

With the contract win, SembMarine will be able to strengthen its position in the renewable energy segment, having been doing so since 2015.

The win also validates its strategy to transform itself into an innovative engineering solutions provider in the offshore, marine and energy industries with a strategic focus on sustainability, says the group.

Wong Teck Cheong, senior vice president at SembMarine Rigs & Floaters says, “We are grateful for the confidence our customer has placed with Sembcorp Marine to bring this breakthrough WTIV design to the offshore wind market.”

“The group looks forward to continuing the close collaboration with our customer to execute this project and contribute to the pace of energy transition,” he adds.

Wong Weng Sun, SembMarine’s president and CEO, called the contract “another monumental step for the offshore wind industry”.
