Homegrown technology company Trek 2000 International (SGX:5AB) was best known for developing the ThumbDrive, one of the earliest USB flash drives, in the early 2000s. At a time when floppy disks were still the default storage medium, the ThumbDrive’s larger storage capacity and user-friendliness drove its widespread adoption worldwide.

As technology advanced and data storage shifted towards cloud-based solutions, reliance on physical devices such as thumb drives declined. The company also made headlines in 2022 when founder Henn Tan was convicted following a lengthy case involving forged invoices and falsified financial statements during a period of financial difficulty.

Since 2018, Henn’s son Wayne Tan has taken on leadership of the company. He believes Trek 2000 is entering a new era, with the invention of the thumb drive and other past issues becoming part of its legacy rather than defining its future.
