Singapore starts to embrace electric cars two years after Tesla's rebuke
DPM Heng said in the 2021 Budget that 60,000 charging points at public carparks and private premises will be installed by 2030.

After years of not doing much to foster the uptake of electric cars, Singapore has started to embrace them.

Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung, speaking in parliament last week, said there is a net carbon positive impact in switching from gas guzzlers to electric vehicles, “even if the electricity is generated by fossil fuels.” And last month, Singapore pledged $30 million over five years for EV-related initiatives.

“With our urban environment, Singapore is quite ideal as a test-bed for the rapid adoption of EVs,” Ong said.
