(March 10): BioNTech SE’s founders will leave the company to start a new biotech focused on messenger RNA (mRNA), the technology behind their blockbuster Covid-19 vaccine.

The couple, Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci, will shift to the new company by the end of the year, BioNTech said on Tuesday. The firm’s American depositary receipts plunged as much as 19% in early US trading.

“The departure of the company’s founders is devastating news for the company and its shareholders” at a critical juncture, said Markus Manns, a portfolio manager at Union Investment and a BioNTech investor. “Both had been the heart and brain of the business.”
