(Feb 10) : Federal prosecutors took steps to end a long-running criminal case against conservative activist Stephen Bannon, who had continued to challenge his conviction for defying a congressional subpoena after he served a four-month prison sentence.

Bannon, an ally and former adviser of President Donald Trump, was found guilty of contempt of Congress in 2022 for failing to cooperate with a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. He was in the midst of pursuing his case before the US Supreme Court.

On Monday, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro in Washington asked a federal judge to allow the government to end the prosecution effort, writing that “the government has determined in its prosecutorial discretion that dismissal of this criminal case is in the interests of justice.”
