Four themes and three local catalysts — JS-SEZ, equities market review and Budget — could drive the Straits Times Index to a new high.

Thilan Wickramasinghe, Singapore’s head of research at Maybank Securities, finds it useful to incorporate some elements of fengshui into what he is doing. Born in the Year of the Goat, he learns from Master Ken Koh that he has a mixed fortune in the Year of the Wood Snake, which can be improved by bringing in some “metal” to offset some of the negatives. “I’m getting a dumb bell from Decathlon to put in my office,” he quips.

As he does regular weightlifting, Wickramasinghe, in his day job of parsing the markets, is projecting that the Straits Times Index (STI), already up 18% last year to around 3,800 points now, can be further lifted to above 4,000 points this year to set a new record.
