US GDP grew at a 3.3% rate in fourth quarter, capping solid year

The US economy expanded in the fourth quarter by more than forecast, powered by resilient consumer spending that helped cap the strongest year of growth since 2021.

Gross domestic product increased at a 3.3% annualized rate, according to the government’s preliminary estimate out Thursday. For all of 2023, the economy expanded 2.5%.

The economy’s main growth engine — personal spending — rose at a 2.8% rate.
