As the weather gets hotter, treat yourself to a gourmet gelato

Chef Sharon Tay left a swanky life in investment banking for her love and passion — ice cream. “In banking, you can work 24 hours easily at a stretch. If I was going to work so hard, I thought, why not try to work for myself?” she recalls.

“Gelato makes people happy. It is more fulfilling to me,” she adds. So, Tay packed her bags and flew to Bologna, Italy, for two months to learn how to make gelato from the masters at Carpigiani Gelato University, the world’s first university dedicated to gelato-making.

After she learned the secret to creating the perfect gelato, she came back to Singapore and used her savings to open her own gelato company. Her first endeavour into the scene was small and she closed shop quickly after realising there were more opportunities in the business-to-business (B2B) market.

After making her name in the B2B market, Tay has decided to once again open a gelateria, welcoming people to sit down, relax and enjoy her gelato.

But that was not before Tay became Singapore’s first representative at the Gelato World Tour Finals in 2015 and clinched the Asia-Pacific title. In 2016, she competed again, coming up against 35 finalists from 18 countries. She emerged as the “Press Choice” chosen by a panel of journalists and gelato experts.

Having won awards, Tay’s gelato are truly of high-quality standards. Options had the chance to try some of her creations and we were screaming for more ice cream.

Located in the lively streets of Kampong Glam, Momolato is an eco-friendly gelateria that offers 18 exquisite flavours of gelato with the choice of Keto, Signature or Premium (from $4.90). Enjoy these Halal-certified gelato in a pandan leaf-wrapped cone (from $1.50), or with a waffle or croffle (from $6.60).

Molato’s super pure gelato uses only the best natural ingredients without additives or artificial flavouring. Some notable must-tries include the Kochi Yuzu Shiso, a tangy yuzu gelato with bits of shiso in it; Chocolate Arabica Coffee, a mocha-esque gelato; Oolong Hojicha Tiramisu, a blend of tea-riffic flavours; and the Mao Shan Wang Durian, a strong and sweet durian gelato.

If you’re watching your diet, try the keto gelato range that is sweetened naturally using monkfruit extract, stevia, erythritol and allulose, which are diabetic-friendly ingredients that are not absorbed by the gut. Even if you’re not on a diet, the Nama Chocolate is a chocolate lover’s dream gelato, extremely chocolatey and smooth.

“Our philosophy can be succinctly summarised as this – we do not make and serve gelato that we do not want our loved ones eating. We make gelato using only clean, natural and wholesome ingredients. No nasties allowed,” says Tay, adding that she frequently enjoys the keto gelato.

For something different, try the refreshing Popsicle Spritzers ($8) — a great treat to cool down from the sweltering sun. Choose from flavours such as the Watermelon Kiwi Pop, Coconut Water Lychee Pop, Mango Coconut and Passionfruit Pop, and more.

Finally, accompany your waffles and ice cream with a sugar-free, diabetic-friendly keto smoothie ($8). Choose between the Mango Yoghurt Pomelo, Avocado Coconut or Strawberry Cheesecake – all made with no sugar and only fresh fruits.

Now, during the Ramadan month, enjoy Momolato’s treats at a special promotional rate.

The Family Pack ($55) is an all-in-one and one-for-all bag of treats including three pints of gelato in special Ramadan flavours: Raspberry Milk with Raspberry Swirls, Pandan Milk with White Chocolate Pistachio, and Dinosaur Milo-Misu. Also in the Family Pack are six popsicles in three flavours: Red Watermelon With Kiwi Slices, Hokkaido Milk With Strawberry Slices, and Mango Coconut.

If you dine in now, you will receive a complimentary Blue Pea Lemonade on the house with every purchase of two scoops of gelato. And best of all, Momolato opens till late during the weekends, so you can satisfy those midnight sweet cravings!
