The Autumn/Winter 2021 shows embrace the usual trends of the season, such as knitwear, denim and sweaters, but in new and unique ways. Designers have looked outwards to the animal kingdom and the sporting world for inspiration, creating eye-catching ensembles for a time when people are slowly reemerging from their homes. Top that off with a few dramatic colour choices and we have a selection of trends that will make your comeback a stylish one

BOLD BODYSUITS
Loose or form-fitting, full bodysuits that stand out have been featured on many runways this season. From Chanel’s elegant patterned piece and David Koma’s simple statement look to feminine florals by Rodarte and Naeem Khan, this trend offers a versatile look.

WILD SIDE
While the leopard has always been loved for its spots, designers have been inclined to embrace the patterns of the zebra, giraffe and cow this year. Colour and pattern clashes, as seen in Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli, inject playfulness on the runway, but you can also command attention with statement accessories à la Moschino.

READY FOR THE SLOPES
Gearing up to hit the slopes, designers have taken inspiration from skiing apparel such as goggles, puffer jackets and sweaters, as well as balaclavas, often styling their designs with a snowy hilled backdrop. There is no mistaking their intent.

TEENY TINY
We have seen the micro bag trend in women’s styles, but this season’s men’s runways also include mini man purses. Just big enough to carry your phone — and if you’re lucky, your wallet — these small bags function more as a fashion statement. While designers such as Coach and Homme Plissé Issey Miyake opt for crossbody straps, Jacquemus and Etro feature more handheld pieces.

UNIQUE YARNS
While knitwear for autumn isn’t a particularly groundbreaking trend, this season’s selection includes out-of- the-box designs. For women, the knitted pieces are mostly head-to-toe creations, as seen by Max Mara and Salvatore Ferragamo, whereas the men’s runways featured knitwear such as knitted polos (Ermenegildo Zegna and Jil Sander).

PLEAT IT
Sharp and crisp or soft and flowy, pleated garments are adored for the effortless way they move with the body and the visual feast it gives while doing so. Christian Dior and Missoni presented breathtaking, almost-sculptural takes on the pleated folds while Bevza and Lanvin offered sophisticated looks that can be worn back to the office and for cocktail evening night-outs.

LEATHER WEATHER
Not all leathers are created equal. Bottega Veneta and GMBH’s almost- glossy shine will guarantee several second glances while Tod’s and Saint Laurent’s throw-ons are the perfect jackets for low-effort, maximum-impact dressing.
