Brunello Cucinelli has pared down the look for women with shades and fabrics that welcome cooler climate ahead

SINGAPORE (Mar 6): Year after year the founder Brunello Cucinelli has been giving collections for both men and women that are consistently elegant and wearable. Since 1978 — when founder Cucinelli founded his eponymous brand in a small Italian town of Solomeo in Umbria, Italy — the world has come to acknowledge his high-quality clothes that range from buttery soft cashmere sweaters to outfits that take you effortlessly from day to night.

Spotlight at this time of year is trained on the women’s fall/winter 2020 collection that is based on the etymology of the word ‘elegance’ — which comes from the Latin term eligere — meaning to choose, select and enhance the most appropriate element.

The collection can be divided into categories: Colours, materials, jackets and shirts, knitwear, trousers and skirts.

For colours, Brunello Cucinelli plays on whites, beiges, lilac, sky blue, aqua and pink. These are interwoven with hints of leather and chocolate. Finishes include metallic shades of gold, silver and bronze.

Fabrics used include granité, tricotine, cavalry twill, gabardine and plain weave wool. The textiles may be structured but thanks to the use of advanced technology and thin yarns, the fabrics are lighter with a more fluid appearance.

Print include tiny checks, houndstooth, damier, pinstripe and regimental patterns much like a British heritage style complete with jacquard embroidery, sequins, printed silk or loop stitching. Leather takes on a key role and used to embellish shirts, dresses, outerwear, jackets, cloaks, coats and down jackets.

Speaking of jackets, the look includes maxi coats and extra-long down jackets. The iconic Brunello Cucinelli Blazers are present as they dominate in a variety of styles such as belted with broad shoulders, equestrian-style cuts featuring pleats, and oversize volumes worn over flimsy dresses and chevalier boots.

The shirt is a must-have item and this season it comes in versions made from padded alpaca or leather, it is worn as a jacket over turtleneck dresses or sweaters, in versions made from shearling, double wool or cashmere. When made from cutting-edge fabrics it provides an alternative to outerwear, and down filled versions are available too.

Knitwear, probably the most well-known of Brunello Cucinelli’s collection does not disappoint. It comes with an offering of textured, bark, and foliage effects that are created with three-dimensional irregular crochet, inlaid or embroidered stitches.

Traditional patterns — cable knits, English rib, flat rib stitches and Northern European motifs – take on a more lightweight appearance through an openwork and mesh effect stitches: The sporty style gives way to more a more delicate and feminine flair.

The design for trousers and skirts are inspired by the men’s collection with a few glamorous tweaks such as tall boots, long tailored Bermudas, worn over trousers, or with skirt-pants that evoke an equestrian style. Loose fit trousers with long or inverted pleats emphasize the interplay of volumes while the waist is enhanced by fabric belts.
