Batik appreciation
Asian Civilisations Museum
Celebrate our Southeast Asian heritage and discover more about the origins of batik at Asian Civilisations Museum’s latest exhibition, Batik Kita: Dressing in Port Cities, now on till Oct 2.
Featuring over 100 masterpieces from overseas and local lenders, as well as rarely seen pieces from the National Collection, the exhibition explores the rich history and culture of batik and batik making, from its traditional roots to contemporary designs.
Visitors are invited to step into an exquisite world of batik textiles that cut across cultures and ethnic backgrounds, and explore the dynamic possibilities of batik as fashion through the years. It also introduces innovations by batikers in the age-old craft, and showcases how batik charted the evolution of new identities in the newly formed nations of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Batik Kita will include curator tours, interactive activities and workshops available online and on-site. Admission charges to the museum apply.

A view from the other side
National Gallery Singapore
Grappling with contemporary conversations around representations of “the Other”, visitors are invited to reflect on the representations of diverse communities of Southeast Asia through National Gallery Singapore’s latest exhibition, Familiar Others: Emiria Sunassa, Eduardo Masferré and Yeh Chi Wei, 1940s–1970s.
The exhibition focuses on works by three less-explored Southeast Asian artists – painter Emiria Sunassa from Indonesia, photographer Eduardo Masferré from the Philippines, and Yeh Chi Wei from Singapore – who were familiar with or connected to the people from the “Other” communities that they captured in their art. The exhibition will also feature contemporary responses from individuals with community ties to the people represented in the artworks. – t This contrasts conventional museum practices, prompting visitors and the broader community to think and engage with the artworks through fresh lenses.

An Australian approach to Japanese cuisine
1-Arden
Chefs of 1-Arden’s top-listed restaurants — Lamley Chua of Oumi and John-Paul Fiechtner of Kaarla — will be teaming up with guest chef Michael Ryan, of 2-hat awarded Provenance in Victoria, Australia, in a six-hands cookout on Aug 17 and 18.
Available for lunch and dinner, the culinary collaboration revolves around Ryan’s contemporary Australian approach to Japanese cuisine, stemming from his more than 30 over visits to Tokyo that culminated in an Only in Tokyo gastronomy guidebook. His love for the best Australian regional produce, together with a deep understanding of Japanese cuisine and culture, pave the way for an exceptional Australian-Japanese farm-to-table experience featuring “'nose-to-tail'” dishes of the season.
The produce-forward, omakase-style four4-course lunch ($138++ per person) and six6-course dinner ($268++ per person) menus highlight a list of ingredients collectively selected by the chefs — as well as head farmer from Edible Garden City Christopher Leow — from various local markets in Singapore, Australia and Japan, as well as 1-Arden’s Food Forest.
In the evening of Aug 18 August before dinner, Leow will personally take guests on a tour of the lush 1-Arden Food Forest and its five themed gardens. For reservations, call 8338-3251 or email reservation@kaarla-oumi.sg.
