Monogram vibes at the beach

Burberry

Burberry takes over Tanjong Beach Club this month from Jul 15 - 27 as part of a world tour for its Thomas Burberry Summer Monogram collection. Everything from the sunbeds to seat cushions, parasols and cabanas will be decked out in full monogram glory. Enclosed in oak brown borders, the TB Summer Monogram will also adorn a large 7m-high wall mural within the beach club as well as a custom Burberry two-seater swing.

Creating a vibrant visual experience and bringing together the iconography of the brand with the adventure of a summer holiday, the new TB Summer Monogram sees the classic Burberry Check merge with the TB Monogram – a motif introduced by Chief Creative Officer, Riccardo Tisci. The result is a bold print that symbolises a synergy of the past and present, and a collection that evokes both a sense of newness and a casual coolness for hotter climes.

Available to purchase at a special pop-up store at Tanjong Beach Club, as well as online and in selected Burberry stores, the TB Summer Monogram collection features a selection of men’s, women’s and children’s wear, including T-shirts, shirts, shorts, swimwear and a range of accessories, together with the Lola bucket bag and crossbody bag.

This year’s edition of Burberry takeovers follows a successful series in 2021 in Bangkok, Dubai, Ibiza, Miami, Mykonos and Xiamen. For the 2022 edition, Burberry is taking over the beach club of Loulou Ramatuelle in Saint-Tropez, Ananti Cove Busan in South Korea, Tanjong Beach Club in Singapore and one final location in Ibiza, which remains to be announced.

EAT
Sky-high sustainable dining

LeVel33

If you haven’t dined at LeVel33 — supposedly the world’s highest urban microbrewery — it’s high time you should. Now helmed by newly-appointed executive chef Jake Kowaleski (formerly Salt Grill), the menu has been mostly revamped to introduce a twist on familiar favourites but with a strong focus on sustainable provenance.

Whether it’s freshly-shucked oysters or refreshing heirloom tomatoes, the ingredients used are of the highest quality and from ethical sources to ensure both wholesome rich flavours with more care for the environment.

Come as a group to enjoy the large Signature Raw and Chilled Seafood Platter comprising thick and fresh cuts of kingfish smoked salmon, sweet Hokkaido scallops, two kinds prawns, crab rilette, salmon roe, oysters and Fremantle octopus. Red meat lovers will be impressed by super tender cuts of New Zealand lamb, and succulent Westholme Wagyu Tri-Tip, both sourced from pasture-fed, free range livestock.

To reinforce a sense of place, many of the dishes are also made with elements of LeVel 33’s famous beers, such as the freshly-baked sourdough breads and butter than contain beer yeast, as well as a tasty lobster bisque simmered with IPA lager and white wine.

Whichever zone you choose, you will enjoy breathtaking views of Marina Bay from 33 floors up, and be pampered with unparalleled service and attention to detail by its close-knit service team.

Master chef residency
Mandala Masters

After two highly successful sold-out culinary residencies headlined by chefs Mauro Colagreco from Mirazur and Gaggan Anand, Mandala Masters is back with an ambitious third residency headlined by the culinary super couple behind Central, Kjolle and MIL – world-renowned Peruvian chef and restaurateur, Virgilio Martínez and World’s Best Female, Chef Pía León.

Running from Aug 5 to Oct 30, the residency, entitled Meters Above Sea Level (MASL), is the first time that this highly-decorated husband-wife duo will be working together on a project of this kind outside of Peru. The Singapore-exclusive multi-course menu will take inspiration from the couple’s ground-breaking work at flagship restaurant, Central, which has amassed an enviable list of accolades, consistently topping the World’s Best Lists, currently as No.4 in the world and named No.1 as the Greatest Latin America’s Best Restaurant from 2013 to 2021.

Together with the Mandala Masters, the chefs have designed MASL as an immersive journey through Peru’s varied natural landscapes and rarely seen or tasted indigenous ingredients. Exploring all corners of the country, one can enjoy below sea level selections of squid, caviar and abalone, as well as scallops, spirulina and uni. Corn, kiwicha or amaranth and cancha paint a crisp and colourful scene of 3,550 masl, before the menu peaks at 3,850 masl with a presentation of native tuber, clay and high altitude leaves. A journey down to 185 masl features Amazonian nut, squash and cabuya before finishing on a sweet note at 1,450 masl with cacao, hidromiel (fermented honey water) and mango.

To provide the appropriate verticality and views, MASL will be hosted by rooftop dining destination Art at National Gallery Singapore, with the support of chef-owner Beppe De Vito and executive chef Daniele Sperindio. It will be the first Mandala Masters event outside of Mandala Club, and the space will be completely transformed for the experience.

In addition to the 11-course dinner degustation menu ($448++), MASL also offers an 8-course lunch menu ($320++), and a Latin American-inspired cocktail pairing (from $169++) curated by the Peruvian head bartender Alonso Palomino featuring Hennessy and Glenmorangie spirits. Moët & Chandon and Krug champagnes are also available.

Priority access for Mandala Club members commences Jun29. Non-members can sign up via mandala.club/masters for pre-launch tickets on Jul 5. General launch will commence on Jul 6.

Homegrown classical quartet

T'ang Quartet

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Singapore's preeminent string ensemble, the T'ang Quartet, will be holding a fundraising concert called Gift of Music on July 27 and 28 at the Esplanade Recital Studio. On both nights, the quartet will present a 90-minute programme of classical masterpieces – Mozart's K465 Dissonance and Brahms' Op 51 No 1 in C Minor.

The T'ang Quartet – a registered charity — will also be launching its biographical coffee table book, T’ang at 30, which documents the group’s 30-year rise to success, and how it intends to forge its way into the future, as well as to inspire the new generation of musicians.

Ticket donations for the first night (Jul 27) are going at $300 per seat on www.tangquartet.co/donors. Concert attendees will each receive a canvas tote bag with a complimentary copy of T'ang At 30. Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, will be Guest-of-Honour, alongside VIPs from the arts and music sectors.

General public can get tickets to the Gift of Music for the July 28 show – $40 (stall) and $28 (concession) – from Sistic. They can also purchase T'ang At 30 on the same evening at a special price of $40. Non-concertgoers can get their hands on the book at $45 on www.tangquartet.co/tangat30.

SEE
Travelling with the Master

National Gallery Singapore

National Gallery Singapore’s latest exhibition Wu Guanzhong: Travelling with the Master is set to instil a new sense of wanderlust as it takes visitors on an intriguing journey of the artist’s life and art through 47 artworks. Broken into four sections, the exhibition renews perceptions of travel, exploring physical journeys and beyond, including the conceptual, imaginative and emotional aspects of travel.

Co-created by a team of docents from the museum, this exhibition marks the first time that the Gallery has taken this approach with an exhibition as part of its efforts to present art through diverse voices and create a more inclusive and welcoming museum experience. In addition, this is also inspired by one of Wu’s core artist notions of reaching both art experts and wider publics through his art.

Avid fans of Wu’s work, the four docent-curators – Gertrude Tan, Queenie Chow, Stella Rong and Tina Nixon — have guided visitors through his exhibitions at the Gallery since 2015, and will share their personal stories, anecdotes and reflections on the modern Chinese master’s art. Admission to the exhibition is free for Singaporeans and PRs.
