If you are craving traditional Middle Eastern cuisine, Safiya by Shangri-La Singapore offers an authentic menu of Arabic favourites for takeaway and delivery. Crafted by head chef Ara Sayegh, Safiya’s signature dishes reveal the rich heritage of the cuisine that is characterised by fresh vegetables and superfoods, quality meats and aromatics made with an alluring mix of spices and herbs such as caraway, cinnamon, cardamom and clove among others.
Every Middle Eastern meal starts off with an enticing selection of hot and cold mezze, each served with pita bread. Start with the Duo Dips ($14+) of Baba Ghanouj and Hummus served with toasted pita bread, and Warak Enab ($14+), a grape leaf wrap with a stuffing of rice and vegetables. You must also try Chef Ara’s aromatic Falafel ($15+) made with a combination of seven spices.
Graze on expertly-grilled mains the likes of Shish Tawook ($20+), a tempting skewer of corn-fed chicken breast marinated in a spiced tomato sauce paired with pickled onions, and Lamb Kebab ($22+) — a winning combination of succulent New Zealand lamb mince with onions, parsley and a heady spice blend. Seafood-lovers will relish Roubyen Meshwi ($28+) — barbecued tiger prawns seasoned with lemon, coriander and garlic.
For dessert, we highly recommend the Baklava ($14+) lovingly made with 28 layers of filo pastry – each layer is cloaked in sugar syrup and crunchy roasted pistachios.

Artistic waste
National Design Centre
One man’s trash is another man’s art, as seen at The Waste Refinery exhibition, now on at National Design Centre till Jan 16. Curated by creative agency Kinetic Singapore, the free exhibition reframes waste as a starting point and an abundant resource, to be rebirthed into beautiful and useful objects.
It opens amid one of the most important sustainability summits on the world stage, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), and will see used tyres, metal mining residue, construction waste and plastic bottles take on a second life as useful products such as sustainable footwear, table tennis bats, children’s clothes, chairs, paint pigments and more.
Among the 20 international and local exhibitors at The Waste Refinery are British fash-tech studio Petit Pli, local second-hand furniture store Hock Siong, homegrown homeware label LAAT, and the students of WeiBensee Academy of Art Berlin.
