A marquee event of Singapore Art Week, the Civic District will come alive from Jan 14 to Feb 3 as the Light to Night Festival returns for its sixth edition, promising a host of digital and on-site art experiences. Organised by National Gallery Singapore in collaboration with its Civic District partners, the three-week-long event, themed “New Ways of Seeing, Thinking and Being”, will offer over 60 online and offline programmes that will stretch from day to night.
Highlights include an immersive outdoor augmented reality (AR) exhibition set against the backdrop of the Civic District by leading AR art production studio, Acute Art, which features a newly commissioned artwork by artist Ho Tzu Nyen. This marks the first time that Acute Art is featuring a Singaporean artist in its international roster of artists, which include KAWS, Cao Fei and Olafur Eliasson.
Other must-sees include the crowd-favourite Art Skins on Monuments — light projections on iconic buildings; the return of live music and performances within the gallery; and immersive art installations and activations in many more new spaces.

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) may be closed for another four years for extensive renovations. While we patiently wait for the big reveal, the museum will be presenting art in new and unexpected ways this year, starting with the opening of SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark — a contemporary gallery space that will combine exhibitions and workshops to promote the work of Singaporean and Southeast Asian artists.

The expansive warehouse, spread over two floors, is an opportunity for the museum to present large-scale multidisciplinary exhibitions and installations. Aside from climate-controlled spaces with 6m-high ceilings, the gallery will also have a multi-use space for events, an F&B corner, an ideas lab, artist studios and a communal hall for talks and performances.
When doors open on Jan 14, visitors will be able to catch video essays by Malaysian artist Gan Siong King, a large-scale installation of a post-apocalyptic world by Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai, an abstract presentation by local experimental band The Observatory, plus a joint exhibition by three pilot residents, Chu Hao Pei, Salty Xi Jie Ng and Johann Yamin.
