From a local fashion exhibition to Singapore-inspired bakes and ‘shiok’ frappuccinos, here’s a roundup of patriotic things to do on National Day week

EXHIBITION
Singapore fashion on display
#SGFashionNow

Design, culture and fashion enthusiasts can look forward to the Asian Civilisation Museum’s first display of contemporary Singapore fashion influenced by Asia’s melting pot of cultures.

Forged through a tripartite collaboration between ACM, LaSalle College of the Arts’ School of Fashion, and the Textile and Fashion Federation (TaFF), #SGFashionNow will feature Singapore Stories 2020 winner Carol Chen’s creation alongside other established Asia designers such as Lai Chan, Andrew Gn and Priscilla Shunmugam. Now on till Dec 19, #SGFashionNow is free at ACM’s lobby.

The exhibition will also be supported by a mix of onsite and online pro- grammes such as online forum, Conversations — Singapore Fashion, Now (Aug 13, 3pm to 4pm), featuring panellists involved in the exhibition who will talk about how we can champion and support local design initiatives. Watch it live on ACM’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.

EAT
Milo Dinosaur Cream Puff
Baristart Coffee

For those of you who love the decadent deliciousness of a Milo Dinosaur — a drink best consumed at your local kopitiam — here’s another way to enjoy it: in bun form. In conjunction with National Day, Baristart Coffee is tapping into Milo’s taste of nostalgia with a limited edition Milo Dinosaur Cream Puff filled with a rich Milo custard made from the same Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk in Baristart’s cream puffs. Supposedly, the Japanese cafe came up with this flavour in response to a growing Milo trend in Japan right now where people are paying premium prices for a cuppa of our fave childhood drink. The National Day Milo Dinosaur Cream Puff ($6) is available at Baristart Coffee from Aug 9–31 at one piece per customer.

EAT
Top hawkers under one roof
Hawkers’ Street

Hunker down and enjoy a feast of hot hawker eats at home from newly-opened Hawkers’ Street at ION Orchard. The 92-seater casual dining eatery is home to six famed Michelin-accredited hawker stalls plucked from all across Singapore featuring Famous Eunos Bak Chor Mee, King of Fried Rice, Ann Chin Popiah, Nam Sing Hokkien Mee, Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice and Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh. Items are available for takeaway or home delivery via Grab Food, Deliveroo and Food Panda. Orders for breakfast items such as chwee kueh, popiah and bak chor mee start as early as 8am.

DRINK
Ice-blended “Shiok-ah-ccino”
Starbucks

If you love yuanyang coffee-tea mix, you’ll enjoy Starbucks’ latest National Day drink which blends the best of both worlds in a new ice-blended Shiok-ah-ccino ($8.20 tall). This features a unique combination of aromatic Starbucks roasted coffee with nutty hojicha tea and chocolate chips, topped with fluffy whipped cream and an adorable Merlion Bearista chocolate topper. For added shiokness, the beverage comes with an exclusive Starbucks stainless steel spoon with every venti purchase, while stocks last.

You can also pair your drink with pastries and desserts infused with comforting local flavours like a buttery Curry Meatless Chicken Pie, or Milo Dinosaur Cheesecake, Ondeh Ondeh Cheesecake, Orh Nee Cake and Mango Sago Cake.

Skip the queue and order ahead via Starbucks’ Mobile Order & Pay mobile app, or have your tea-time treats delivered to you via GrabFood, Foodpanda or Deliveroo.

SHOP
A mindful living retail event
Takashimaya DS

Supporting our desire for more self-care and mindfulness is Japanese department store Takashimaya DS which has kicked off a three-month campaign to champion mindful living through its products and retail spaces from now till Oct 31.

Entitled Autumn Abundance, the storewide showcase will spotlight over a hundred product offerings across 68 brands (including some new ones) over five floors, from the personal and household categories including promotional food and beverage items from the Food Village and Food Hall.

For easy navigation, products have been classified into three main categories: Rest & Rejuvenation featuring self-care items like Ostrich Pillow’s eco-friendly products to promote restful sleep; Staying Safe which highlights anti-Covid devices like Aurabeat’s AG+ portable silver ion antiviral air purifier and Lexon Oblio 10W wireless charging station with built-in UV sanitiser; and Responsible Consumption which spotlights sustainability such as Swatch’s space watch collection featuring a matte white bio-ceramic case made with bio-sourced plastic glass. Every $2 from each product purchase from the Responsible Consumption series will be donated to support WWF Singapore’s conservation initiatives.
