The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is finally on its way and Omega is launching a special tribute timepiece

As the saying goes, better late than never. After months of delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions on international travelling, the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is finally set to begin on July 23 this year. And while we count down to the event and the athletes make their final preparations, the event’s Official Timekeeper, Omega, is unveiling a very special timepiece in tribute to the occasion.

Tokyo 2020 will mark the 29th time in history that Omega has fulfilled its role as Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932. Bringing almost 90 years of experience to the occasion, the brand will once again capture every second of action with unrivalled innovation, precision and passion.

Showcasing this is the Seamaster Diver 300M Tokyo 2020 (pictured above) that delivers a unique colour scheme inspired by the Games emblem, along with the very best in watchmaking technology. First released at Baselworld 2018, the Seamaster Diver 300M has been spruced up with a new look featuring deep hues of blue and contrasting white.

The 42mm case is crafted in stainless steel and mounted with a blue ceramic bezel ring, which is filled with a white enamel diving scale. The bracelet is also stainless steel, but polish-brushed to give it a nice sheen that seamlessly integrates with the case.

To complement the blue bezel, Omega has chosen a polished white ceramic dial, which is laser-engraved with soft waves to add depth. On the dial, the date window is located at 6 o’clock, while the famous “Seamaster” title is highlighted in red under a blue “Omega” logo. The hands and indexes complete the dial design with its white Super-LumiNova that is outlined with a deep blue.

The sapphire crystal caseback marks this special occasion with a transferred Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem. The watch is powered by the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8800, which has been officially certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) —a standard of performance that any gold medal athlete would be proud of. This is a self-winding movement with a co-axial escapement and a rotor that winds in both directions. It has a power reserve of 55 hours and is resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. The calibre beats at 25,200 vibrations per hour, which is rather unusual, sitting in the middle of the industry-standard of low-beat and high-beat movements.

This non-limited, special edition watch comes with a special Olympic Games presentation box, along with a Master Chronometer card and a full five-year warranty.

Limited editions

A part from the Seamaster Diver 300M, Omega is also celebrating the Tokyo 2020 with two limited edition models: Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M and Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M. Both watches are limited to 2,020 pieces each.

The Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition features a 41mm polished blue ceramic dial that is distinguished by a laser-engraved Tokyo 2020 pattern, as well as a date window at 6 o’clock, and rhodium-plated hands and indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova. The sapphire crystal caseback includes the Tokyo 2020 logo transferred in blue, and the Omega Master Chronometer Calibre 8900 inside can be seen through the glass.

The watch comes with a structured blue rubber strap that is attached to the case with polished stainless steel links, as well as an additional stainless steel bracelet included in the presentation box.

On the other hand, the 39.5mm Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition showcases a polished white ceramic dial with a redtipped central seconds hand to represent the flag of Japan. There is also a white ceramic bezel with a Liquidmetal diving scale and the number 20 filled in red liquid ceramic.

Presented on a white leather strap, the watch features a sapphire crystal caseback with the Tokyo 2020 logo transferred in blue, and the Omega Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 inside can be seen through the glass. The presentation box includes an additional stainless steel bracelet and NATO strap.
