Well-meaning friends have long warned me against taking a holiday by myself in the Maldives, citing it as a honeymoon destination where solo travellers may feel bored because there is nothing to do. I, however, discovered quite the opposite during my visit to the JOALI and JOALI BEING resorts.
These two resorts offer a distinct vibe and a wide range of activities to keep anyone engaged and entertained. The word “joali” refers to a Maldivian type of chair used for relaxing; everyone has one outside their home in the island chain. Hence, the connotations of homeliness and hospitality run deep throughout both resorts.
What distinguishes both properties is their unwavering dedication to providing exceptional facilities, a wide range of activities, delectable cuisine, and a staff that consistently embodies politeness and respect for guests’ privacy. The traditional greeting embraced throughout the island is one aspect that truly touches the heart. From the gardeners to the general managers, everyone greets you with a heartfelt “Maruhabaa” while placing their right hand over their heart. This meaningful gesture originated during the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic. This genuine and warm salutation carries far greater significance than a fist bump.
To enhance the guest experience, each visitor is assigned a Jadugar (Maldivian for “magician”) or butler who orchestrates guests’ itineraries and transports them in an electric buggy from one destination to another, ensuring punctuality for all planned activities. The Jadugar’s response to every request is a resounding “Certainly”, and they deliver precisely what is asked for, right on time. An example of this seamless service was when my snorkelling gear was delivered well before my appointment.
For five days, I indulged in a delightful array of experiences, immersing myself in wine tasting, massage, art appreciation, and more. My journey began at JOALI, situated on Muravandhoo Island in the picturesque Raa Atoll.

An installation artwork of the grey heron, the national bird of the Maldives, crafted by Cape Town-based vernacular architect Porky Hefer
JOALI
Upon arrival at the resort, a scenic seaplane journey of approximately 40 minutes transports you from Velana International Airport to JOALI. This destination is renowned as an art-immersive resort, where installation artworks dot the island’s landscape at every turn. Unlike in a traditional art gallery setting, you are actively encouraged to engage with the art pieces by touching, feeling, and even sitting on them.
Inside your accommodation, you will discover an art map that beckons you to explore the island. Among these remarkable creations, my personal favourite is the representation of the grey heron, the national bird of the Maldives. Crafted by Cape Town-based vernacular architect Porky Hefer, this art piece takes the form of a swing, with the heron’s head as a unique perch. It offers a serene retreat where you can immerse yourself in a book or simply take in the view of the Indian Ocean right before you.

The Maldives comprises approximately 1,190 coral islands arranged in a double chain of 26 atolls. It comes as no surprise that JOALI is involved in coral reef restoration efforts
Given its location in the Western Indian Ocean, the Maldives comprises approximately 1,190 coral islands arranged in a double chain of 26 atolls. With such a rich marine environment, it is no surprise that JOALI is involved in coral reef restoration efforts. During my visit, I had the privilege of witnessing the impact of these initiatives first-hand. Accompanied by Shameen, a marine biologist, I embarked on an enchanting trip to observe the reef restoration works. Shameen proudly showed me one of the many ongoing projects: the direct transplantation of corals. This method involves collecting fragments of coral that have become dislodged or detached from their parent colonies and carefully relocating them to selected sites on the House Reef at JOALI Maldives. The results were truly inspiring. As I gazed at the transplanted corals, I noticed hints of colour beginning to appear on some of the rescued specimens. This was an encouraging sign, indicating that the programme was a success.
From the depths of the ocean, my journey of discovery continues above ground with a captivating 60-minute session at a traditional Hammam. The experience begins with an invigorating and thorough cleansing with a revitalising body scrub. Next, a full-body foam massage gives me a total relaxation treat. The Hammam experience left me feeling revitalised and refreshed from head to toe.
The villa offers an unobstructed view of the Indian Ocean
For a bit of a naughty indulgence, I spent an hour with sommelier Siddhesh for a cheese and wine pairing session. He took me through a course of three wines — starting with the Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner Ried Lamm 2019 — and we did the textbook tasting of see (the colour), smell (the minerality), swirl (to wake up the wine), savour (enjoy the taste in your mouth) and finally sip. We paired this wine with brie. Finally, we had the manchego cheese with the heavy gorgonzola saved for the dessert wine, a 2015 Clarendelle Amberwine, a beautiful honey-hued wine.

Suitably inebriated, I went for a wonderful meal at Soake where I had my fill of three courses of sashimi, sushi and more. After dinner, I was grateful to retreat to my over-water villa — an idyllic haven that provided the ultimate sanctuary. As I settled in for the night, the soothing sound of the waves gently lulled me into a peaceful slumber.
The next morning, I was greeted with a sight that left me breathless. The Indian Ocean stretched before me, displaying an indescribable shade of blue that seemed to defy imagination. In total, 73 spacious accommodations redefine sustainable glamour. Choose from a selection of beach villas, over-water villas and expansive residences.
The Gate of Zero arrival platform is designed to look like the swirling movements of a whirling dervish dance
JOALI BEING
In just 15 minutes, I arrived at The Gate of Zero, the arrival platform that can be reached via a speedy boat ride. The building itself is a mesmerising representation of the swirling movements of a whirling dervish dance. The dancers in this traditional dance spin rapidly, causing their clothing to fan out in a circle, reminiscent of a spinning top.
I found myself at the pinnacle of wellness, where therapies are thoughtfully crafted by blending ancient wisdom with modern scientific knowledge. The offerings at JOALI BEING revolve around four fundamental pillars: mind, skin, microbiome, and energy. Microbiome, a term frequently used in the wellness field, refers to a vibrant community of micro-organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes that coexist within a specific environment.
My wellness journey began with a visit to Dr Jay, who asked me a series of lifestyle questions to assess my stressful existence filled with deadlines and a poor diet. Recognising the importance of understanding my energetic imbalances, Dr Jay guided me to hold onto the handles of a bio-energetic testing machine. This device accurately measures the energetic integrity of body systems, glands, and organs, enabling the identification of any imbalances caused by allergies, infections, yeast and mould overgrowth, chemicals, heavy metals, or hormonal issues.
Enjoy a tea appreciation session featuring a range of teas
After receiving the printout from the bio-energetic testing machine, I learnt about the specific foods I should include in my diet and those I should avoid. To my surprise, grapes were among the items on the “avoid” list, meaning I had to bid farewell to my favourite indulgence — a glass or two of Prosecco. On a positive note, however, I found solace in the fact that I could still indulge in my beloved gin and tonic. If the good doctor happens to read this, I must confess that while I have made earnest attempts to adhere to the plan, there have been a few occasions where I’ve slipped off the wagon.
At JOALI BEING, numerous avenues to health can be explored. One option is to immerse in the solace and healing through the expertise of the Wellbeing Therapists at Areka, who offer a range of treatments. Every therapy session is conducted with utmost professionalism and respect. One example is Watsu, a profoundly relaxing hydro-bodywork treatment incorporating massage, joint mobilisation, shiatsu, stretching, and dance. During this therapy conducted by Aneesh, you experience a gentle sense of flotation as the therapist cradles, rocks, and stretches your body. For 60 blissful minutes, you can surrender to the therapist’s nurturing guidance, allowing deep relaxation. That night, I slept like the proverbial log.
At Core, I ventured into cryotherapy, which utilises extreme cold to freeze and eliminate abnormal tissue. Stepping into the freezing chamber, I spent three minutes wearing minimal clothing accompanied by gloves, socks, ear muffs, and headphones. The health benefits of cryotherapy have been well-documented. In just a single session, it has been shown to enhance the body’s natural immune response by improving blood circulation, boosting cellular activity, eliminating toxins, increasing white blood cell count, and reducing cortisol levels. Additionally, a single session can burn up to 800 calories, providing fantastic support for weight management programs.
For each therapy, whether it’s the soothing and transformative Watsu or the invigorating cryotherapy experience at Core, the focus remains on your well-being. The skilled practitioners ensure that you feel comfortable, safe, and guided throughout the entire process, allowing you to reap the full benefits of these remarkable therapies.
After completing the invigorating cryotherapy session, I was greeted with a cup of warm tea from sommelier Polina. She expertly guided me through an educational tour of her extensive tea collection, which comprised 74 varieties from 17 tea-producing countries. The selection of teas is aligned with the four pillars approach, with each type offering unique benefits. For instance, Polina suggested oolong or pu’er tea to aid digestion after a meal. As a general guideline, she recommends 1 gm of loose tea leaves for every 100 mm of water with temperatures ranging from 80°C to 90°C.

Next, I explored my olfactory senses as I learned how to create my fragrance oil to take home. A range of oils, including neroli, sweet orange, clary sage, lemon balm, geranium, and many more, awaited me. With the fragrance expert’s guidance, I crafted a blend of sweet orange, lemon balm, and vetiver oils. These oils were carefully mixed in a test tube and then poured into an essential oil roller bottle, providing a convenient way to be used while on the go.
The enticing aroma of herbs and flowers awakened my appetite — just in time as I joined the chef in the training kitchen to prepare a delectable meal. With his guidance, I assembled (he did most of the heavy lifting) a delightful spread consisting of chicken soup, chicken curry, and fragrant yellow rice.
At JOALI BEING, the menu features regenerative cuisine that harmonises three essential elements: culinary creativity, a contemporary approach to nutrition, and their distinctive philosophy of well-being. Within the dining establishments, Mojo and Flow, the menus offer a diverse selection of seafood, meats, vegetarians and desserts. Each dish is accompanied by its calorie count, ensuring you can make informed choices without the need to whip out your calculator. For instance, the Braised Beef Cheek came in at a modest 200 calories, while the Crème Muscovado dessert delighted my taste buds at only 210 calories.
My stay at JOALI and JOALI BEING provided me with extraordinary experiences that I would not have enjoyed otherwise, given the busyness of city life. The sense of freedom, joy, and lightness I experienced there will forever hold a special place in my heart. From exhilarating moments to contemplative ones, I encountered incredible individuals who left a lasting impression on me. These memories will continue to inspire and uplift me long after the trip.
