SEE | Glacier Dreams | Next Initiative
Internationally-renowned digital media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, Refik Anadol, will debut his latest project Glacier Dreams for the first time in Singapore. The hypnotic visuals will be projected on the façade of ArtScience Museum during i Light Singapore 2023, now on till June 25 from 7.30pm to 11pm daily (with extended hours to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays).
Swiss wealth management group Julius Baer commissioned the massive art project as part of the Next initiative — a platform to support collaboration between forward-thinking artists at the forefront of scientific research and technological development.
Inspired by the beauty and fragility of the world’s glaciers — which draws particular attention to the impact of climate change — Anadol created the Glacier Dreams series, processing over 100 million visual materials from archives and personally collecting images during his expeditions to Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica.
Glacier Dreams is a long-term research and art project at the intersection of multi-sensory experiences, machine learning and environmental studies. As part of the showcase, which has taken a year to materialise, Anadol also developed a glacier-inspired perfume in collaboration with Swiss fragrance manufacturer Firmenich to be distributed at private events.
Anadol is paving the way for the use of AI and technology in art as the first artist to use AI in public art and is pushing the boundaries of art to create immersive experiences and visualisations from the unseen world of data using machine learning algorithms. His works have been exhibited at iconic venues, museums, and festivals worldwide, as well as showcased at the 2023 Grammy Awards, The Museum of Modern Art, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Art Basel, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza, among many others.
