How difficult could it be to make rojak? The ingredients that go into our beloved salad are common in many Southeast Asian kitchens. Take vegetables, fruits, peanuts — cuttlefish if you feel like a treat — and toss them with a combination of prawn paste, sugar, lime and tamarind. Piece of kueh, right?

But there is a reason why some rojak sellers draw long queues, and some do not. One might have all the ingredients for rojak on hand, but turning said ingredients into a masterpiece requires careful preparation and balanced proportions.

Like rojak, a diverse board of directors might comprise all the “right” pieces, but without the balance that brings their contrasting strengths into harmony, a board doesn’t realise its fullest potential.
