There is a popular (mis)conception that heavy drinking involving Moutai is an essential part of doing business in China. It is certainly true that during some parts of a business negotiation, Moutai will almost inevitably appear. In some provinces, partaking is more critical to concluding a deal, but Moutai is rarely the start of a business discussion.
The question “Would you like a drink?” is a largely meaningless courtesy in most modern business office settings, where the offer can be politely accepted or equally as politely ignored.
This is a critical question when asked at a meeting taking place in a senior manager’s office in China. Here, the invitation to drink tea is much more important, particularly if its centred around the often elaborate and exquisitely carved tea tables that are often an integral part of such an office.
