The government will launch a tender in the coming months for the 1.05ha site at 37 Emerald Hill, the former site of the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS). The tender will be for a mixed-use development featuring “unique” hotel concepts, lifestyle offerings and community and public spaces that will honour 37 Emerald Hill’s rich heritage, says Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan in an update during his ministry’s Committee of Supply debate in Parliament on March 2.

The first building on the site was completed in 1925, and 37 Emerald Hill went on to house SCGS for almost 70 years between 1925 and 1994, according to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The school moved to Dunearn Road in 1994, and the campus was leased to various international schools.

37 Emerald Hill is located between Design Orchard and the Emerald Hill Conservation Area, which was gazetted as a conservation area in 1989. The former SCGS was not included in the conservation area then.
