KUALA LUMPUR (May 10): Mahathir Mohamad will be sworn in as Malaysia’s seventh prime minister on Thursday, palace officials said, following his shock election victory over the coalition that has ruled the Southeast Asian nation for six decades since independence from Britain.

The monarch will swear in Mahathir as prime minister at 2130 hours, a statement from the office of Malaysia’s king, Sultan Muhammad V, said.

“His Majesty strongly supports and respects the democratic process and the wishes of his subjects,” it added, and dismissed allegations that appointment was delayed.
