The handling centre, located at SATS cargo’s airfreight terminal, will cover an area of 3,000 square metres or about half the size of a soccer field. It will be active 24/7 and be operated by SATS Singapore Hub.
SATS has unveiled its new bulk unitisation programme shipments (BUP) handling centre in Singapore, which the group expects to reduce the minimum processing time for air cargo shipments from two-and-a-half hours down to two hours, while also serving as a testbed for the upcoming Changi Airport Terminal 5 and the Changi East Industrial Zone.
BUPs are ready-to-ship cargo packages built up by freight forwarders or shippers to be loaded onto aircraft. It typically combines multiple items, for example; smaller consignments of e-commerce packages, boxed items or loose parcels, all of which are secured and packaged as a single item. With this, BUPs can be tracked electronically as a single item, thus enabling faster cargo loading and unloading with a lower risk of damage.
