Superapp Grab’s enterprise service unit GrabMaps has become a data provider for Amazon Location Service, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) location-based service.

Amazon Location Service helps developers add maps, points of interest, geocoding, routing, tracking and geofencing to their applications.

Following the announcement, AWS customers now have access to regional mapping data which includes over 50 million addresses and points of interests from GrabMaps, spanning Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Customers benefit from Grab’s hyperlocal search and routing functionality tailored to the region’s attributes, from its small alleyways and subdivisions to hard-to-find places.

“GrabMaps offers a unique view of Southeast Asia, with data and functionality that is exceptional in freshness, coverage and accuracy. We are excited to collaborate with AWS’s world-class infrastructure to share our capabilities with other companies, and help them build services and applications that we hope will better serve Southeast Asians,” says Grab chief product officer Philipp Kandal.

GrabMaps was launched June 2022 amid Grab’s efforts to be fully self-sufficient. While it would no longer be dependent on paid map and location-based services from third party providers, it will continue to use OpenStreetMap as its base layer map via an Open Database License.

Today, GrabMaps is powering more than 800 billion application programming interface calls per month across a variety of Grab services. It has also helped add more than 800,000 kilometers of missing roads to the OpenStreetMap.

Shares in Grab closed 11 US cents higher or 3.14% up on Feb 8 at US$3.61.
