Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government has fallen after a stunning territorial advance by opposition groups over the past few days.

Assad and his family arrived in Moscow, where they were granted asylum by the Russian government, Russian state agency TASS reported Sunday.

Earlier, Syrian state television announced the “triumph of the great Syrian revolution and the fall of the criminal Assad regime.” Assad decided to step down and left the country, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
