GIC CEO Lim Chow Kiat sees a “remote possibility” that the US dollar will lose its reserve currency status.

“There are some challenges with regard to debt and fiscal position. Growth is very important; it does seem like a lot of things are riding on AI to get growth. There’s a lot of reliance on AI delivering productivity, so if that doesn’t happen, you might get a bit of a hairline crack,” says Lim at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2025 on Nov 19.

That said, an overhaul of the world’s reserve currency will only come about if the “foundation of the US system cracks”, he adds. “We don’t really see that.”
