An ex-commercial executive of Sembcorp Marine has been charged with corruption, in which he obtained and attempted to obtain “gratifications” worth $202,877 in cash, according to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on Aug 16.

The 61-year-old Malaysian, Balakrishnan A/L Govindasamy, had between 2015 and 2021, received these rewards from nine contractors representing different companies attempting to advance their own business interests.

Govindasamy faces 14 charges under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), of which five have been amalgamated.

Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard was a fully owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, which rebranded in April to Seatrium.

The probe into Seatrium by CPIB started in May, following an investigation by the Office of the Comptroller General of Brazil in March on Sembcorp Marine’s wholly-owned Brazilian subsidiary, Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz (EJA), for irregular conduct linked to Operation Car Wash.

Shares in Seatrium closed 0.1 cents lower, or 0.74% down at 13 cents.
