Shell has started exports from Canada’s first liquefied natural gas project, helping to meet rising Asian demand and extending its position in the global LNG market.

The first cargo from the plant in British Columbia was loaded on the vessel Gaslog Glasgow. Operator LNG Canada Development said on Monday that the ship is destined for “global markets”. Shell owns 40% of the project.

LNG Canada is ramping up at a time when demand for gas is on the rise and buyers are focused on trading routes that avoid geopolitical flashpoints — particularly around the Persian Gulf.
