Ng Kok Song, the chairman and founder of global asset management company Avanda Investment Management, is considering running for the upcoming presidential election.

According to news reports, Ng, who was formerly GIC’s chief investment officer, will come to his final decision within a week. Ng had retired from the sovereign wealth fund in January 2013 after serving for 27 years before co-founding Avanda Investment Management in 2015.

Ng told broadsheet The Straits Times, that the matter was “an issue of great national importance and there will be immense personal implications”.

“I am still deliberating,” he adds.

Ng’s decision comes nearly a month after George Goh's announcement to do the same. Goh, the founder of Harvey Norman Ossia and chairman of Ossia International, announced his intention to run on June 12.

If Ng and Goh’s application is deemed eligible by the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC), there will be a three-way contest at the upcoming election in September.
