Minimalism: Space. Light. Object.
This first collaboration between the National Gallery Singapore and ArtScience Museum will display more than 130 works re-examining minimalism’s origins. A key feature is the ongoing engagement of minimal art with Asian art and spirituality in the work of Asian, American and European artists.
The Gallery will explore the development of minimal art and ideas from the 1950s to the present day, tracing its shift from painting to sculpture and then to spatial installations and immersive
environments. Singaporean artist Jeremy Sharma will also be showcasing his new commission.
ArtScience Museum will explore the impact and legacies of minimalist sound and experimental composition within a dedicated sound room.
Special programmes at both venues will feature music, film, dance and interactive installation, showing the close engagement of other art forms with Minimalism. Further details to be announced.

Hybrid Brain
Contemporary artist Entang Wiharso explores the issues of identity, belonging and being “others” in a mobile society. Wiharso worked on Hybrid Brain in two places — Yogyakarta and Rhode Island, the US, where he and his family have been living between since 1977. His sense of belonging and un-belonging are reflected in his work through the use of vivid colours, glitter, collage, ink and even car paint.

Asian American actors take the lead in this thriller whose premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year received positive reviews. John Cho plays David Kim who after the death of his wife finds it difficult to connect with his daughter Margot (Michelle La). As the distance between them widens, Margot goes missing. While searching for her, David discovers the life his daughter has been living. Also stars Debra Messing and Joseph Lee. The movie opens on Sept 27.
SINGAPORE (Sept 24): Get ready for a whole lot of fun and Cyndi Lauper music when Kinky Boots makes its debut in Singapore. Based on a book by Harvey Fierstein, this Broadway musical hit is inspired by the true story of a beautiful friendship between two unlikely characters. Charlie Price befriends drag queen Lola at a time when his family’s shoe business is going through tough times. As it happens, Lola and her friends need some sturdy stilettos for their performances.

Hits of Chinese Music II: Plucked Strings
A Star is Born
This classic movie that had two remakes (1937 and 1976) is already creating Oscar buzz for its lead actress Lady Gaga. She plays Ally, a yet-to-be discovered singer-songwriter. Bradley Cooper plays Jackson Maine, the heavy-drinking country singer who encourages Ally to step into the limelight. The difference in this release is the treatment of the characters and how romance blossoms. Do watch the 1976 version that stars Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand first so that you have a basis for comparison to decide which version you prefer. The movie opens on Oct 4.
Hits of Chinese Music II: Plucked Strings
Following on the successful 2017 Hits of Chinese Music, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra will host a one-night only “sequel”. Led by SCO music director Tsung Yeh, this concert is a tribute to the pioneers of our Chinese music scene. It presents the yangqin, pipa, liuqin, zhongruan, sanxian, daruan and guzheng in a variety of formats, from duet and sectional chamber to full orchestra.
