Enjoy afternoon teatime treats at Tsui Wah with Hong Kong-style savoury bites

Let’s face it, we will be stuck in our current country of residence for a while until international travelling is safe again. And that could take another year or two, who knows? Many would-be travellers were disappointed after the Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble was cancelled before the first flight even took off.

But when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. So, make the best out of the situation and get a taste of Hong Kong-style “cha chaan teng” or Kong Kong cafés at Tsui Wah. Sip on some infamous Hong Kong milk tea and transport yourself to Hong Kong right here in Singapore with Tsui Wah’s Signature Afternoon Tea set.

Available on weekdays (excluding public holidays) for dine-in and takeaway from 2.30pm to 5.30pm exclusively at Tsui Wah Clarke Quay, the Signature Afternoon Tea Set comes in two versions: Set A ($18.80++) and Set B ($14.80++). Each set is great for two and contains a variety of classic, alltime favourite items in smaller portions, so you can get to sample more in a single seating.

In Set A, find items such as the King Prawn in XO Sauce with Tossed Noodles XO featuring delectable juicy large-sized prawns accompanied with tossed noodles tossed with the moreish XO sauce. Similar to that of the local wanton noodles, this was a personal favourite due to its springy noodles and savoury sauce. The Kagoshima-Style Braised Pork Cartilage in Fish Soup with Mixian can also be found in this set. Named after the hometown, Kagoshima, of the Japanese chef who shared the recipe with Tsui Wah, this dish sports a tender braised pork cartilage with slurpy mixian in fish soup.

Set B would be great for those with a smaller appetite, as it features the quintessential Hong Kong comfort food and breakfast dish — Luncheon Meat and Scrambled Egg Sandwich. Also perfect for children, this comes with a side of thick-cut French fries.

Apart from that, both sets come with Cantonese snacks, such as Deep Fried Wanton served with sweet and sour sauce; Deep Fried Chicken Wing coated with a savoury crispy batter; and the popular Savoury French Toast Bites served with condensed milk. The set also comes with two drinks to choose from, including classic Tsui Wah beverages such as the Yuen Yeung, which is a mix of coffee, tea and milk; Milk Tea; Coffee with Condensed Milk; Tea with Condensed Milk and Tsui Wah’s Signature Coffee. You can top up $1.50 to enjoy Tsui Wah’s signature Hong Kong-style beverages in a bottle, served in a classic Hong Kong-style ice bucket, to keep the drinks cold without diluting them.

Afternoon tea aside, check out some of Tsui Wah’s signature dishes that will ease your cravings for Hong Kong delicacies. Try the Tsui Wah Signature Pork Chop Bun ($10) that features a thick-cut pork chop sandwiched in between two buns and served with some condensed milk on the side for a sweet touch. Speaking of condensed milk, a lot of Hong Kong cafés seem to like adding it to food to give it a creamy and sweet flavour. The Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk ($4.70) is a favourite snack for anytime of the day.

One noteworthy thing about Hong Kong café food is its fusion-style Chinese-Western dishes. Try some of them here, such as the Baked Fried Rice with Pork Chop in Tomato Puree ($17.80) topped with a generous amount of gooey warm cheese; and the Mixed Grills on Sizzling Plate with Red Wine Gravy ($25.90), featuring a medley of meat such as bacon, chicken, sausage and more.

As we wait for international borders to open up, it’s a good thing that we have such authentic international food right in Singapore.
