Now that the festivities are over, here’s where to go to burn your calories

A month into the new year, it’s time to finally get a start on your new year’s resolutions, if you haven’t already done so. And if yours is to up your fitness game — regardless of your experience — go check out FiiTBOXX.

Located in the laidback Joo Chiat area, the gym is the brainchild of Ken Mok, a veteran in the fitness industry with over 20 years of experience. It opened its doors in January last year. “I have managed over 40 gyms and yoga studios across four countries — Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Hong Kong — for the past two decades. As a personal trainer myself, what makes this job rewarding is to help make life-altering changes to the way people live and feel about themselves,” says Mok.

“The happiness generated when someone is confident and happy in their skin is something to behold, and when I’ve helped contribute to that, it motivates me to continue helping others to achieve that,” he adds.

FiiTBOXX is a premium boutique fitness gym that is a one-stop strength, cardio, and functional training facility, with proprietary equipment to empower, strengthen and transform you inside and out. This space is suitable for everyone, even beginners, to reach their fitness goals. To date, FiiTBOXX has 300 regular members and personal training clients.

The expansive space is very well equipped for a boutique gym. It not only has the essential weights but also offers gym goers weight machines, TRX suspension trainers, a wide range of cardio machines and more.

Sensing that there is more that he can provide the fitness community, Mok decided to build on the FiiTBOX brand and introduce FOXX, a space just on top of FiiTBOXX that offers group training. “I was inspired to start my own boutique fitness space and use my expertise and creative ideas to spark a change in the local fitness market after observing the swift international growth of boutique fitness over the past few years,” says Mok.

FOXX aims to revolutionise HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts and provide a strong community experience through its proprietary Into The Zone (ITZ) Series, created by Jen Goh, vice president of group fitness and master coach.

The ITZ Series is an intensive circuit training programme combining cardio with strength and boxing while utilising unique techniques and equipment. This includes a specially designed FOXX TROT Sand Step Board and FOXX Abs-Glute Roller, which are lightweight and non-bulky, making it easy to use for all participants.

Workouts are also results-driven, where a Myzone heart-rate belt allows individuals to track their performance through a studio screen display, ensuring training at optimum intensity. Coupled with an upbeat environment consisting of light and sound from a rhythm lighting system, the ITZ Series gives individuals the motivation and drive to challenge their limits.

Unlike the traditional gyms, which can be somewhat intimidating for those with no prior gym experience, the classes at FOXX are suitable for beginners while also being challenging for seasoned gym junkies. Furthermore, you would not need to plan your workout for the day as the instructors here have it all worked out.

Options had the chance to try out a class at FOXX, and the verdict is: A great workout by a fun bunch of instructors. When I arrived in the evening, I was told that it was “legs day” — my most dreaded day — and that Goh herself would teach the class.

Sporting a lean and fit physique, Goh was very bubbly as she introduced the participants to one another. It was a small class of only five. We were split into groups, and Goh explained how our class was going to proceed.

She then took us through about five stations, each with three different workouts to complete in a given time. She also demonstrated each workout we would have to do, although the workouts were already displayed on the screens at each station. I appreciate this gesture as it allowed us to observe her form and technique, and we could ask questions if we had any.

As it was a small class, Goh was able to give us ample attention to correct our forms or cheer us on. Overall, the class was intense, and I had a good workout, as I saw my sweat dripping on the floor and my heart rate increasing on the monitor (tracked by the Myzone heartrate belt I was wearing). It was also a fun experience as I made some friends, and the other members and I connected through our shared struggles to complete each set.

FOXX has a maximum capacity of 20 in a single class and is open every day. Classes start from $19 a class, depending on the package you choose, with some packages being shareable too. From now till the end of February, those interested in purchasing a package at FOXX can enjoy a 15% discount. To redeem an extra 1 free FOXX ITZ Class, key in the promo code “READER1”.
