A few months into the year, it seems those fitness goals have stalled thanks to all the seeming endless festive celebrations and feasting. To get you back into the grind, we have done some research on the ground and zeroed in on some studios and gyms for you to get your sweat on to burn off those holiday calories. Plus, with these workouts being so fun — who knows — you might make it a habit.

SPIN

Spin or indoor cycling has amassed a following in recent years. This workout involves not just pedalling on the bike but it combines choreography and core work throughout the class. While many enjoy the upbeat music and flashing lights (that remind them of the good old days of dancing the night away in a club), spinning is definitely a great cardio workout for all.

Revolution
520 North Bridge Road, #03-01, Singapore 188742

Now with four outlets located at Orchard, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Bugis, Revolution is one of the largest spin studios in Singapore. It has just opened up its Bugis outlet this year and sports some fancy flashing lights in the studio. Revolution also has a large and diverse range of instructors that teach across all outlets. Revolution is also known for their frequent themed rides that keeps things fresh and lively: From Disney tunes to K-Pop beats, there is definitely a theme ride for everyone.

Popsicle
81 Clemenceau Ave, Singapore 239917

Part of the fitness brand Active Fitness, Popsicle Rhythmic Cycling opened up its second spin studio at UE Square (the first opened in the Joo Chiat area). Winner of the ClassPass 2021 award for one of Singapore’s top fitness studios, Popsicle is all about finding that sweet spot between pushing yourself and creating a safe and fun space for the community. The great thing about Popsicle, is that they have specific classes just for beginners, so that they can properly learn the moves and not feel pressured next to advanced riders in a regular class. Popsicle also provides both digital and in-house membership plans.

REFORMER PILATES

Reformer pilates — a form of exercise that is performed on a bed-like frame with a flat platform that rolls back and forth on wheels — has been around in Singapore for a while but has gained popularity recently. It may not be an intense workout that gets your heart rate spiking, but it still works up a sweat and is great for improving your strength and mobility.

Brought to you by the fine people of Lab Studios (who are big on their barre and yoga classes), The Flow Pilates by Lab Studios is a newly launched studio in Joo Chiat. Done in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur’s The Flow Studio, the classes at The Flow Pilates by Lab Studios are centred around the former’s unique “Dynamic Reformer” method, which is a low impact yet high intensity, strength-based workout. And unlike other reformer classes in Singapore that focus more on rehabilitation, The Flow Pilates by Lab Studio’ group classes are accessible and focus on dynamic strength training, making it an effective and fun physical session for all.

BOXING

This sport is not just about sparring or squaring off in a ring. Some studios are now offering rhythmic boxing, which is like a spruced up version of your average boxing class. Rhythmic boxing focuses more on following the rhythm of the music that is playing, punching out to the beat of the songs.

Sugar Boxing

Another Active Fitness Brand, Sugar Boxing has just launched its new and second outlet in Orchard Road, following the success of its first outlet in Joo Chiat. Spanning over 2,000 sq ft, the space features 20 bags and a dynamic sound and light system to get you pumped up and ready for a knockout experience. Choose between a Sugar Rush signature boxing class that focuses on a high intensity interval training (HIIT) working or the Sugar Overload total-body conditioning class that combines both boxing and strength training. Incidentally, Sugar not only won the ClassPass award for one of the country’s top fitness studios, but instructor Kamesh Waran also took the number one spot in the Top Instructors category.

Cru68

Cru is synonymous for its intensive classes, and their CruBox classes are no different. Expect 50 minutes of non-stop full-body workout with the music-driven classes that combine shadow boxing, heavy bag work, cardio training as well as body-shredding and conditioning. It is not just about working out to the beat here, these boxing inspired drills are specially designed to focus on sharpening your skills and boosting your cardio performance. With a strong focus on technique, CruBox strives to maintain a boxing programme that promotes authenticity in a group setting, while building the ‘wolf- pack’ (what they call their community bound by strength, loyalty and togetherness).

GYM TRAINING

Maybe you would much rather burn off your calories the traditional way — by going to the gym. But going there could be a daunting experience, especially if you are intimidated by the sight of heavy machines and even heavier sets of heavenly bodies flexing their muscles. Still, we recommend you check out these places, regardless of your goals and fitness levels.

Virgin Active

They say a proper workout is not just about “huffing and puffing”, so they pride themselves on building quality movement as the foundation and then scaling each exercise session based on each individual’s ability.

BARRE

A combination of ballet and pilates, barre is a recent exercise addition that is becoming increasingly popular. However, barre is a toning, body- and weight-lifting workout that is certainly not easy: The instructors may look elegant and effortless in class, but for those of us who are not used to it, the squats, lunges and sit-ups can get you sweating buckets. No prior ballet experience is needed here and this high-reps and low-impact workout is great for those looking to fine-tune their muscles.

Barre Lab

Another studio brought to you by Lab Studios, Barre Lab is located in several locations around the island, namely Tanjong Pagar, Holland Village, Joo Chiat and East Coast. The classes here aim to achieve the results of a dancer’s body. Choreographed with music and designed for a full body workout, classes are for everyone — including men. Furthermore, Barre Lab’s classes will focus on tiny movements to work each muscle to increase strength and endurance. Choose between the Barre Signature class (that combines elements of yoga, dance and Pilates for a full body workout) or Barre Cardio, a specially designed class that combines cardio, strength and conditioning. There is also Barre Flow, a more ballet inspired class that challenges your strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination.
