Over-water sprints | SailGP

East Coast Park comes alive on Jan 14 and 15 when Singapore Sail Grand Prix makes its debut in Singapore as part of an eleven-stop global championship. Held at Parkland Green, nine international teams battle it out on hydrofoiling F50 catamarans flying at speeds approaching 100 km/h, just metres from the shoreline.

Teams from Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United States will compete for points in six fleet races and one final top-three shootout in the ongoing quest to be crowned overall season winner.

Guests can enjoy a fantastic weekend of racing with ticket options that appeal to every spectator's experience. Options available include private VIP hospitality suites, waterfront access to the race village that includes live commentary and entertainment, cutting-edge, wing-sailed race boats and rare opportunities to interact with SailGP athletes.

Flashy wheels on parade | Singapore Motorshow

Singapore's largest and most iconic motoring event, the Singapore Motorshow, returns to Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition from Jan 12 to 15. Presented by the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA), the four-day event promises to be more than a typical car show with a thrilling line-up of activities for all ages ranging from the iconic Russ Swift stunt show, celebrity meet-and-greets, previews of electric vehicle models, plus a chance to win a brand new Subaru or Nissan. Visitors will get to view the latest models from 24 participating brands — including the first appearance of Polestar’s concept car — and plenty of opportunity to purchase a wide array of automotive accessories and lifestyle products. Tickets can be purchased on-site at Suntec Singapore Concourse L3, or on Sistic, from $8 per person.

Artful interactions | Singapore Art Week

A pinnacle event in Asia’s visual arts calendar, the Singapore Art Week (SAW 2023) returns for its 11th edition featuring more than 130 programmes and exhibitions presented by over 700 artists and curators worldwide. From now on till Jan 15, this 10-day festival will see two significant art fairs taking place at homegrown art platform S.E.A. Focus at Keppel Distripark and the inaugural edition of Art SG at Marina Bay Sands.

Not to be missed is the vibrant Light to Night festival at the Civic District; an Artwalk around Little India and Jo Chiat by Lasalle College of the Arts; as well as the homecoming presentation of Pulp III: A Short Biography of the Banished Book, which was shown at the recent 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia and the Singapore Biennale.

Residents can also explore their connection with the environment as SAW 2023 takes over the island with playful interventions transforming spaces. SAW will also see its first-ever collaboration with the People’s Association to engage with Community Arts and Culture Clubs in five neighbourhoods across Singapore as part of #ArtsInYourNeighbourhood.

Queen of wagyu | Fat Cow

Fans of wagyu will know of the Sandai — the big three wagyus of Japan — Kobe, Ohmi and Matsusaka. Unique on the palates of gourmands everywhere, these three varieties of beef are prized for the depth and finesse of their flavour, intramuscular marbling, and their rarity. Of these, the Matsusaka is one of the rarest for global gastronomes — having been approved by the Japanese authorities for export only recently.

For a limited time only, wagyu connoisseurs will get to savour Matsusaka wagyu at Fat Cow, which will be presenting the “Queen of Wagyu” in a variety of top cuts — ribeye (120g, $198++), ribeye cap (150g, $288++), and striploin (150g, $288++). Lightly dusted with salt and gently grilled on Japanese binchōtan, diners can fully appreciate the beef’s flavour and buttery texture in its purest form.

Fat Cow will also offer the Matsusaka in a donburi ($260++), pairing seared A5 striploin with a careful selection of premium ingredients, like sliced black truffle, caviar, ikura, foie gras, as well as the restaurant’s signature ‘Fat Rice’ to add greater depth, nuances of flavour and texture.

Whisky house, cocktail bar | Quaich Bar Wanderlust

Do you know where to go for new and exciting tipples? Head to Quaich Bar Wanderlust, founded by the same folks behind the successful speakeasy, The Other Room at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel and The Other Roof at Ann Siang Hill.

Sequestered at a corner past InterContinental Hotel’s lobby, Wanderlust is fashioned as a retro-luxe globe-trotting lounge where imbibers can escape to corners of the world with its journey of signature cocktails and bar bites inspired by different countries. If you love your dram, there is an extensive collection of at least 100 world whiskies like Bunnahabhain 12 years (Scotland), Tipperary Watershed (Ireland), The Lakes Whiskymaker’s Colheita (England) and Three Ships 10 years (South Africa).

From art deco-styled leather and velvet-clad seats to the gilded cabinets and tasselled chandeliers, the whimsicality of Wanderlust is reinforced by its playful menu and easy-going vibe that seeks to make the enjoyment of whiskies and cocktails approachable to all levels of drinkers. The cocktail list of 19 signatures (all at $25) is primarily centred around familiar flavours of its inspired country while incorporating house infusions, homemade syrups and bar-made bitters, much like its cousin concepts. Contenders include a Korean-BBQ inspired Miyeok Guk with seaweed-washed vodka, makgeolli and drops of sesame oil; a Mojito meets Thai Milk Tea variant; and a Chinese-styled Bourbon Sour variant with prune-infused bourbon, red dates and ginseng syrup - to name a few.
