(May 23): UK police said “a number” of concert goers were killed late Monday after an explosion at Manchester Arena, in northern England, during a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.

“Emergency services are currently responding to reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena,” Greater Manchester Police said in statement posted on Twitter. “There are a number of confirmed fatalities and others injured.”

Police gave no details of what might have caused the incident. Witnesses told Sky News that they heard a loud bang at the end of the performance. Footage posted on social media by a Guardian newspaper reporter showed a bomb disposal van driving into the area and the roads closed off by armed police.
