The antics of a Texan oilman in the 1970s may haunt Bitcoin today. Nelson Bunker Hunt, who died in 2014 at 88, was once one of the richest men in the world.

Hunt prospered in the 1960s by buying stud farms in Texas and oil fields in Libya. In 1969, his holdings in Libyan oil were nationalised. Hunt then turned his attention to silver.

Hunt was a rich man with simple tastes. He drove a beaten-down Cadillac. Though he weighed over 300 pounds, he flew economy class. He was one of the few oil barons who did not drink.
