Jan 20 was a watershed day for the world’s two superpowers. In North America, the divisive Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States. If the first few weeks are any indication, he will likely rule roughshod over the US and rock the world order for the next four years.

That very same day, China’s 20-month-old AI start-up top dog launched its eponymous DeepSeek-R1 large language model (LLM), whose out-of-the-box, cutting-edge reasoning abilities achieve cost-performance ratios “out-of-the-industry” superior to OpenAI and all other LLM models. 

Many analysts — both on the sell-side and the buy-side — are focusing on DeepSeek’s cost competitiveness and superior performance over other LLMs, particularly in coding, math and logical deduction.
