(July 11): OpenAI head of safety Johannes Heidecke is leaving the artificial intelligence (AI) company following a reorganisation, according to Wired.

Chief research officer Mark Chen said OpenAI’s safety teams would report to vice-president of research and head of alignment Mia Glaese, whose role has been expanded to oversee both research and safety, Wired reported, citing a memorandum it had seen.

Saachi Jain will become interim head of safety systems and report to Glaese, accordiing to Wired.

Heidecke told colleagues this week that he was departing the firm, the magazine said.

Chen told Wired in a statement that the company is “grateful for Johannes’ contributions to OpenAI.” He said it’s “important that our safety work is integrated with frontier-model development, with an earlier and more direct role in shaping key model, product and launch decisions,” Wired reported.

OpenAI’s chief futurist Joshua Achiam told colleagues earlier this week that he would be leaving the company after nine years, the report said.
