Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) has begun its push for 5G, as it deploys hundreds of 5G Standalone (SA) sites across Singapore.

The 5G SA sites run on 3.5GHz spectrum which enables the telco to deliver ultra-fast speeds and swifter response times, it says.

The 5G SA site locations include Orchard Road, the central business district (CBD), Harbourfront and Sentosa.

The telco says it is also progressively expanding its 5G in-building coverage to more indoor sites.

The in-building coverage first started with VivoCity and will now be expanded to Ngee Ann City as well as selected Singtel stores in Singapore.

In addition, Singtel will begin issuing 5G SA compatible SIM cards to customers from April 27.

The SIM cards are capable of supporting faster speeds, lower latency rates and offers enhanced authentication and encryption for a seamless and secure 5G experience, says Singtel.

The telco has also upgraded its 5G radio access network to connect to a cloud-native standalone 5G core network.

Singtel says it will intensify its 5G SA deployment across Singapore in the coming months as handset manufacturers roll out 5G SA software updates.

New and re-contracting customers with Singtel who have opted for 5G Now add-on or 5G XO Plus plans will receive Singtel’s new 5G SIM card for free till May 31.

Existing customers with eligible plans can switch their current SIM cards for free at all Singtel stores.

“We are ready to usher in a new era of connectivity with 5G SA and introduce our customers to the transformational benefits of blazing fast speeds and ultra-responsive connections which will elevate their everyday experiences,” says Anna Yip, CEO, Consumer Singapore at Singtel.

“Our engineers are working in earnest with key handset manufacturers to complete testing and prepare the next-generation network for commercial launch. As our 5G network gains momentum and evolves, we invite our customers to mark an exciting 5G milestone with us and upgrade to our new 5G SIM cards to future proof and enhance their mobile experience,” she adds.

As at 10.15am, shares in Singtel are trading 1 cent lower or 0.4% down at $2.54.
