Weekout: Sip creative cocktails, savour gluten-free Brazilian-Asian cuisine and visit this Japanese exhibition

The show – initially part of the double-billed Life in Edo | Russel Wong in Kyoto exhibition – has been both extended and expanded, now as a standalone display with new prints that offer fresh vignettes of Kyoto and exciting new behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of geisha.

Visitors can continue their exploration of Japanese art and culture through the black-and-white prints from the original display, enhanced with more photographs that broaden perspectives on the traditions of the geiko community and Kyoto landscapes.

These 37 never-before-seen prints spotlight customs such asohaguro – teeth blackening, which signifies a coming of age; and even portraits of Kyoto’s oldest geiko of the early 2010s. Visitors will also be able to explore the seasonal colours and cuisine of Kyoto through a selection of vibrant, colour prints that spotlight familiar facets of Japanese life, culture, and tourism.

Downtown East If you’re planning a family day out at Downtown East to frolic at Wild Wild Wet, indulge in comfort eats or catch a movie, do swing by wefie-friendly art installation Wave Hello — the latest art exhibit to set foot at the lifestyle destination, following the successful six-month art exhibition Lite On! last year.

Depending on where you’re standing and the time of day, this colourful maze- like structure, designed by two Singaporean artists —Tina Fung of Space Objekt and Dawn Ang of Aeropalmics, takes on different shapes and forms, inviting us to expand our imaginations and explore new ways of seeing things. This project is supported by the National Arts Council’s Arts and Culture Nodes Network initiative, developed for people to enjoy the arts in the heartlands.

The Butcher’s Wife

Whether you’re craving lunch for dinner, or dinner for lunch, The Butcher’s Wife now caters to all your ravenous needs with a brand-new, all-day menu for all-day dining stretching from 11.30am to 9.30pm every Tuesday to Sunday.

The new menu is created by Brazil-born, Paris-trained head chef Mariana Campos and will feature inventive dishes rife with stronger influences and playful flavours that draw inspiration from Brazil as well as across Asia, with a leaning towards gluten-free cooking.

Highlights include Moqueca ($37), a traditional Brazilian seafood stew served with toasted banana oats farofa; Bacalau Mantecato ($16), a Venetian adaptation of whipped dried cod served on crispy fermented chickpea toast; Marinated Chicken Thigh Dosa ($26), featuring locally sourced chicken thigh in a fermented cashew cream topped with pickled chayote and wrapped in South Indian crepe; and “Land Tuna” Salad ($23), a vegan poké filled with crunchy greens, Myanmar brown rice and watermelon cubes in a classic, sweet-savoury Japanese marinade.

Pair your meal with natural wines or delight in an Asian-inspired “Kampong Cocktail” made from leftover fresh ingredients in the kitchen. Top on the list includes the Spiced Pineapple Calamansi ($20), a tropical dark rum punch made from a house-fermented red chilli and local honey concoction; Pandan Coconut Milk Punch ($20), a clarified cocktail that brings together pandan and coconut with leftover steamed milk from frothing cappuccinos and a pandan kueh for garnish; and The Butcher’s Bloody Mary ($20) that spices up your vodka with a flavourful house-made salsa repurposed and strained from a tomato and chilli sambal.
