(March 31): Nvidia Corp said it has invested US$2 billion in Marvell Technology Inc as part of an agreement to collaborate on silicon photonics technology, an effort to make artificial intelligence (AI) services more affordable amid historic investments in the new technology.

Nvidia, which has been investing in partners that can help build out AI infrastructure, will integrate its tech platform with networking capabilities from Marvell, it said in a statement on Tuesday. Nvidia’s accelerators are tied together for more advanced AI services. The two companies will also collaborate on speeding up telecommunications networks for advanced new technologies.

“Together with Marvell, we are enabling customers to leverage Nvidia’s AI infrastructure ecosystem and scale to build specialised AI compute,” said Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang in the statement.

Silicon photonics help make data transmission faster and more energy efficient, key areas for improvement in data centres that can consume enormous amounts of power as they provide services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

Shares of Marvell jumped 9% in premarket trading in New York. Nvidia’s stock rose 1.4%.
