Why? Well, because we’ve asked to drive only the compact models from the Mercedes-Benz all-electric EQ range, specifically the EQB and the EQA (electric versions of the GLB and GLA, respectively), which serve as pretty compelling entry points into the brand’s fold.
If you are wondering, “Mission: Electric” aims to put drivers into the brand’s EV models, which have been broadly divided into three core categories and feature four models per category (from a fleet of 12 cars in total).
Luckily for me, the events team has obliged, and I get to rotate between the EQA 250+ Progressive (from the Mercedes-Benz Center to Dempsey) and our fave from the brand’s range, the higher spec’d EQB 250+ Electric Art (from Dempsey to the Bistro by Gardenasia in the Lim Chu Kang “countryside”).

In a true sign of the times, they both wear crossover forms, which is the populist choice in the segment, so you get that rugged chic, MPV practicality and an ability to conquer the concrete jungle.
Our stint in the EQB 250+ Electric Art took us through the city, highway and, yes, even the wild and winding “countryside” traffic and roads.

This is because the “Mission: Electric” brief was to ensure the participants could experience the cars in all manner of conditions.
We quickly realised it is hard to beat Mercedes-Benz’s electric compact crossover in terms of all-round versatility and comfort.
Also, with 140kW (190hp) and 385Nm on tap from the 70.5kWh battery, it is capable of a decent turn of speed as you move off from a standstill.
The EQA and EQB will max out at a top speed of 160km/h, which is adequate for Singapore use and short trawls up north. The ride is well-damped and proves supple even when the going gets rough.

With its front “grille” featuring a black panel surface and star pattern, the EQA and EQB are instantly recognisable as members of Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric “EQ” brigade.
While older EVs may suffer from a lower operating range, Mercedes’ new breed of compact crossovers delivers a range of up to 569km on a full charge, which is more than adequate for a week’s use (if not more for certain households).
Under the skin, both the EQB and EQA are technically identical, but we prefer the former for its third-row feature.
We’re often out with six to seven people, so the EQB’s extra seating over the EQA is useful.
Moreover, the EQB’s cargo capacity can be expanded from 465 litres to 1,620 litres, which is perfect for our Ikea excursions or when we need to take the three dogs out together.
The cabin is comfortable and digitalised, with a 10.25-inch central touchscreen taking centre stage. It is sporty and posh in equal measure and should be familiar territory for Mercedes-Benz die-hards.
Often, the difficulty with technology is in making it easily accessible, but the EQB delivers the goods in more ways than one.
One can easily get in and drive it off without too much fuss or fanfare, and it offers ample personalisation avenues in terms of aesthetics and dynamics.
All in all, these qualities make the EQB a good candidate to consider for both newcomers and fans of the brand who may be new to the world of electric mobility but appreciate the familiarity of the three-pointed star and all it entails.
